Spotlight on Our Local Youth…Kendall Parsons

Story by Michelle Ince

The Graford chapter of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organization has an incredible streak running: After having the past two state FCCLA presidents, this year the chapter boasts another state officer in Kendall Parsons.

Kendall is no stranger to FCCLA, which originally was called the Future Homemakers of America before being renamed in 1999. Her mother, Tonya Parsons, is the adviser, and Kendall already has been in the organization for four years.

“My journey has been really exciting and a little challenging at times,” Kendall said. “I have been involved in FCCLA since sixth grade, which gave me a strong foundation in leadership and service. Over the years I’ve taken advantage of opportunities to compete, serve and grow my skills. Running for state office as a freshman was intimidating, but I worked hard, stayed confident and believed in myself.”

When asked about what responsibilities she has in her new role, Kendall said: “As Texas FCCLA state vice president of public relations, my role is to help promote FCCLA across the state. I help share our organization’s message, highlight member accomplishments, and keep others informed about events and opportunities. This includes working on social media, communicating with members, and representing FCCLA positively and professionally.”

She added: “I have had so many people support me along the way. My biggest inspiration has been my sister, Breanna Morgan, who served as state president. Watching her lead and succeed showed me what was possible. My adviser, who is also my mom, has played a huge role in preparing me by constantly encouraging me and giving me opportunities to step outside my comfort zone. She has always believed in me and helped me stay confident. My teachers and community have also supported me and helped me prepare through leadership experiences and guidance. Also, being part of Graford FCCLA, which has such a strong tradition of success, has really helped build my confidence.”

Kendall said Graford is the only program in Texas to boast back-to-back state presidents and back-to-back national officers, including a national president, and she enjoys being a part of such a strong chapter.

“I really enjoy participating in community service and leadership activities,” she said. “My favorite community service project we did this year was collecting items for an organization called Fuzzy Friends.”

Kendall, who is passionate about helping animals and strives to support organizations that have animals as their main focus, said she uses her role in FCCLA to continue this mission.

“I hope to continue that tradition and inspire other students to get involved, step out of their comfort zone and take advantage of the opportunities FCCLA provides,” she said.
