yacht that made the long journey from Nice, France.

For Brian and Mandy Bird, Possum Kingdom Lake is more than a weekend escape; it’s become a way of life with the couple and spurred Brian Bird’s next big adventure.

Brian Bird grew up in Eastland, Texas, and started coming to PK four decades ago with his family. He met his wife when they were 21 and introduced her to Possum Kingdom Lake, and for years the couple rented a place and brought their 16-foot boat with them to pull their three children on tubes behind the boat. The Birds said they enjoyed spending weekends at PK with kinfolk and friends.

The Bird’s new yacht is appropriately name “Bird’s Eye View”. The back features raised channel letters and back lit lighting.

Brian Bird’s business résumé includes a small electrical company he started in Eastland with some tools and a pager because “I couldn’t afford a cellphone,” he said. The company grew to more than 800 employees, and he worked around the world in places such as Puerto Rico and the Bahamas on large electrical projects, including rebuilding electrical services after massive storms.

He sold his company in 2023 and has now moved on to his newest venture as founder and chief executive officer of World Bass Enterprises. This new organization aims to change professional bass fishing with a tournament featuring the top 50 anglers in the world vying for the crown of true world champion, and it will offer one of the largest purses in the sport at $3 million. The five-day event will take place in Nashville, Tennessee, starting Oct. 28 and will be streamed live from Old Hickory Lake. The Opryland Resort in Nashville will be the site of a festival event for all the fans.

These days the Birds live full time on a ranch outside of Eastland, but they spend lots of time at their home in Hell’s Gate, which they bought in 2023, and said they’re looking forward to the new season on their luxurious 58-foot yacht that is the largest watercraft on the lake. The couple teamed up locally with Daron Wood of VIP Boats & Yachts to buy the yacht, which is the second one they’ve owned at PK.

Their new vessel, appropriately named “Bird’s Eye View,” is the epitome of luxury and style. The Prestige F5.7 was built in Nice, France, and made its way on a cargo ship to Galveston before being transported by truck to Possum Kingdom. Once at PK, Wood’s company began the process of getting the yacht ready for launching. VIP Boats & Yachts added custom lighting, a sound system and Starlink internet, and all the features on the boat can be controlled by an Apple iPad or laptop computer.

Spectators enjoyed viewing the celebration and touring the yacht.

Since 2020, Woods’ company has partnered with Prestige Yachts to sell more than a dozen of the company’s vessels on inland Texas lakes, and the Birds’ F5.7 is the third yacht at PK bought through this relationship. The Birds had owned a 46-footer but upgraded to create more space for their growing family needs.

The Prestige F5.7 sports the following features:

  • Three staterooms.
  • Two-and-a-half heads (bathrooms).
  • A flybridge with seating for 12.
  • Dual operating stations (lower helm and upper helm).
  • Owner-operator capability.
  • Joystick docking with diesel power.
  • Premier luxury interior finishes that blend French craftsmanship and Italian modern design.

With a full air-conditioning system, upgraded audio-visual systems, underwater lighting, onboard cameras, smart controls via laptop or iPad, and Starlink internet, the Birds’ boat is designed for year-round use, which is something PK’s conditions can accommodate.

Unlike some lakes constrained by storage and slip size limits, PK has seen a trend toward larger vessels. With rocky cliffs that soften wave bounce and deeper water in areas such as Hell’s Gate, boats more than 30 feet long are becoming more common, but a 58-footer is still able to turn heads as it passes by.

The Birds’ slip was extended and raised to accommodate the vessel’s height and 58-foot length, with a roof clearance built specifically for the yacht’s profile.

The Birds’ luxurious yacht will allow for their three children and spouses, their four grandchildren and their many friends to spend hours with them on the lake. The couple said they’re looking forward to cooking, watching ballgames and just relaxing on their new boat. Like so many other families, they’re planning to spend time during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend at PK, and this year’s festivities will be extra special aboard their beautiful new yacht.
