New “Marine 1” Fire-Rescue Boat Boosts Emergency Response on Possum Kingdom Lakex

As Possum Kingdom Lake continues to grow as one of North Texas’ premier recreational destinations, so does the need for emergency response. To meet that increased demand, Palo Pinto County Emergency Services District No. 1 has placed its first dedicated fire and rescue vessel, named “Marine 1,” into service at the lake.
Marine 1 is designed as a multiple-mission response unit, and it’s equipped to handle water rescues, boating emergencies, shoreline fires, search operations and other public safety incidents throughout Possum Kingdom Lake. The vessel also serves as a valuable firefighting resource by providing a mobile water supply for fires near the shoreline, where hydrants are often unavailable.
“Our goal has always been to provide the highest level of service possible,” said Danny Watkins, the county’s fire chief. “As the popularity of Possum Kingdom Lake continues to grow, so does the need for specialized emergency response. Marine 1 gives us the ability to respond quickly on the water, protect our firefighters, and better serve the residents and visitors who depend on us.”
The vessel is built for year-round operations and is equipped with advanced GPS navigation, side-scan sonar, forward-looking infrared (FLIR) thermal imaging, fire-suppression pumping capabilities and specialized water rescue equipment. These tools allow firefighters to safely operate day or night while responding to emergencies on one of Texas’ largest lakes.
The project was made possible through the collaboration of numerous community partners who shared a common vision of improving public safety on Possum Kingdom Lake.
Quality Marine led the transformation of the vessel into a fully equipped fire and rescue boat, with the business donating both labor and resources throughout the project.
“I really don’t want to be known for a donation,” said Chip Collins of Quality Marine. “It’s not about that. But that boat is making an impact on the PK community, especially when it’s used in a real emergency. Then it will come full circle.”
Additional support came from Sacred Cross EMS and La Villa Marina, which donated radar and night vision technology, while Breakers Marina provided a permanent home for the vessel, allowing firefighters to deploy quickly anywhere on the lake. The Possum Kingdom Lake Association also provided financial support to help complete the project.
“As stewards of the taxpayers living on Possum Kingdom, ESD No. 1 is proud to provide the PK Lake community with its first fire and rescue boat,” said board member Mike Carter.
Every firefighter assigned to Marine 1 must complete specialized marine training and successfully pass a Marine 1 rescue proficiency swim test before serving aboard the vessel. The evaluations ensure that firefighters possess the physical readiness and water rescue skills necessary to operate safely in the demanding conditions unique to responding to emergencies on the water.
Marine 1 reflects Palo Pinto County ESD No. 1’s commitment to investing in innovative emergency response capabilities while strengthening partnerships throughout the community. Together, those efforts ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy Possum Kingdom Lake while knowing a dedicated fire and rescue team is prepared to respond whenever and wherever those services are needed.
